Basic Scoring Rules in Basketball
Melanie Salkin, former head buyer of merchandise for Rose Salkin Bridals and Fashions, enjoys watching basketball in her free time. Melanie Salkin also leverages her knowledge of basketball to engage children as a tutor.
In a basketball game, a successful attempt at the basket is worth one, two, or three points. One-point shots are those that the team gains in a free throw, which occur after a player from another team commits a particular foul, such as one committed on a shooter. A referee may also award free throws following a technical foul or after a team has committed a particular number of personal fouls over the course of the game.
After the referee announces the number of free throws that the fouled team will receive, the fouled player goes to stand on the free-throw line. This line is located directly in front of and closet to the basket. A successful attempt is worth the aforementioned one point.
Two-point and three-point shots are scored during regular play. The distinction between the two options depends on whether the player is standing inside or outside of a specified three-point line, drawn around each basket. Successful shots made from outside the line score three points, while those made form inside are worth two.
